Performance

"Performance is the discipline of getting things done."

There is increasing concern regarding the traditional performance management model due to the ever-changing demands of the market place and the increasing complexity organisations face.

To achieve organisation success there needs to be alignment between individual and organisation goals and behaviour. There is also an increasing need to lead rather than manage due to increasingly wider spans of control and flatter organisation structures. Managers are expected to lead and coach rather than command and control. The CBI Performance Navigator addresses these issues and helps you to achieve alignment through linking strategy to a balanced set of team and individual measures.

High performance organisations deal more vigorously with performance management. They focus on the performance management process to energise both individuals and teams.
Performance Navigator has developed some critical guidelines that help managers ensure both goal alignment and goal achievement.

The name Performance Navigator was carefully selected as it captures the need to lead, setting direction and monitoring direction, rather than command and control. It provides a framework for communicating your business strategy and plan through to team and individual accountabilities. We also incorporate the Company's Values and Performance Model so that these are reinforced throughout the process. This system provides tools for setting, monitoring and reviewing performance against targets.

Performance Planning

CBI helps you set up the Performance Navigator system and is available to help train your personnel. Existing strategies and plans can be incorporated into the system and Key Accountabilities are cascaded through to individual Key Accountabilities. Performance Navigator uses the Business Excellence and Balance Scorecard criteria to set Key Accountabilities as this framework has a proven track record of achieving high performance.

One on Ones

Periodic review meetings between employee and manager provide opportunity to ensure progress is on track against the plan, highlight areas of drift and determine the appropriate corrective action or review the plans due to changes in the environment. Some short-term goals have to be dynamic in this highly competitive environment whilst still keeping focus on the longer-term critical success factors. This review process ensures a thorough understanding of progress against plan as the year progresses so there are no surprises. A data base management system keeps track of each meeting so records are kept in one place.

Performance Reviews

Performance Reviews are held either bi-annually or annually according to the company's needs and are designed to formally rate a person's performance against the agreed Key Accountabilities. This may also include the persons Development Plan. These meetings differ from One on Ones in that the rating is quantified and linked to salary reviews and career planning.

Multi-Level Meetings

Performance Navigator also encourages team reviews through multi-level meetings. These meetings provide an energising focus on team performance, goal alignment and the communication and deployment of the strategy and current state of the business to a wide cross section of employees.
